Class C Commercial Driver's License
The commercial driver's license (CDL) offers a diverse range of vehicle types and trucking jobs. It is among the most flexible CDLs. It can be used for everything from recreational vehicles and buses to passenger vehicles, and even hazardous transportation vehicles.
You can drive straight trucks, box truck, dump trucks and buses that carry 16 or more passengers including the driver.
Passenger Vehicles
New York drivers can choose from a range of license classes. These classes are designed to meet the needs of different driving styles and vehicle types. Understanding the different classes is essential, whether you're looking to drive down Broadway in your parents' 1986 Toyota Corolla, or pilot a truck through the Adirondacks.
The class C non CDL license is perfect for those who wish to drive passenger vehicles such as sedans or station wagons. It allows the operation of single vehicles that have GVWR of up to 26,001 pounds. You can also tow vehicles up to the maximum trailer weight of 10,000 pounds. Drivers may add endorsements to their class C license to gain greater job opportunities. These endorsements could include tank (P), passenger (P), tank (T) or hazardous materials (H). These endorsements are usually added by passing additional knowledge tests and specialized skill tests.
Passenger vehicles with a class C non-CDL license are limited to transporting up to 16 passengers, which includes the driver. Drivers are also required to limit the number of passengers younger than 18 that they transport, unless it is an immediate family member or someone over 18. Teen drivers who have a class C driver's licence and are under 18 must always have a parent in the vehicle.
To be eligible for a non-CDL class C license you must be 18 or older and pass a medical examination. In addition, you must meet federal requirements to drive on interstates or for hazardous materials transport.
A class M license is available to those who want to drive mopeds or motorcycles. This is only for drivers who are junior, and it is only valid in New York. Class M drivers can only use motorized two-wheeled vehicles. New York teens must complete a training course and log hours of practice before they are able to get their class M license. The license for teens will be subject to restrictions, for example, the driver not transporting any passengers under age 21 and not driving between 11 p.m. until 6 a.m.
Combination Vehicles
If you require a combination vehicle for your job, then Class C is the best option for you. This license allows you to drive vehicles that have a gross mass rating of the vehicle (GVWR) of more than 26,001 pounds, and trailers weighing less than 10,000 pounds. This includes passenger vans as well as small hazmat vehicles, and some delivery trucks. You could also drive school buses, provided that you have the required endorsements and pass the background checks and medical exams.
A number of states have additional rules and regulations applicable to drivers with this license class, for example, a requirement that you keep a log book that shows how many hours you've driven and the kind of cargo you're carrying. Failure to keep the log book could result in fines or even the suspension of your CDL. You may need to obtain an oversized load permit if your cargo exceeds certain limits.
You must be at least 18 years old to get a Class C license. You must pass the required knowledge and skills tests and pass any training or work-related experience required to advance to a CDL level. You must also be 21 years old to operate a vehicle across state lines and transport dangerous materials.
To get a class C license you must pass a medical examination and go through an identity check, which includes a criminal background check. You must also pass the drug test. Some states require you to pass driver's training or attend trucking safety programs before issuing a CDL.
In addition to these conditions, there are additional restrictions you must satisfy in order to operate a commercial vehicle with an CC license. Some of these restrictions are based on age, while others are determined by the type of vehicle or passengers you're carrying. For instance, some states will not allow you to transport non-family members under age 21, and others restrict the number of non-family passengers to the maximum of one.

Towing Vehicles
A category C + E licence is among the most comprehensive HGV licences that you can get which permits drivers to operate a variety of large trailers and vehicles. This includes single and double trailers with a maximum authorized mass (MAM), up to 8,250kg. This permits drivers to drive articulated vehicle like lorries, coaches and drawbar vehicles known as tipper trucks or artic.
Along with passenger cars and trucks drivers with an ACC license can operate small commercial vehicles, such as dump trucks, vans, and straight or box trucks. If they have the necessary endorsements, they are also able to drive buses that carry more than 16 people for hire as well as vehicles that transport dangerous materials.
Tow truck drivers are a different category of drivers that require the category C license. They typically work with tow trucks that have an GVWR that is less than 26,001 pounds. They can tow other vehicles if the towed vehicle has a GVWR less than or equal to that of the tow truck.

Drivers with an a Category C license can also get an additional licence, called"T endorsement. "T endorsement" which permits them to drive a double or triple-trailer vehicles. This requires them to pass an additional written and a practical test, and a driving test. This is an extra that can be added to a category C license. Certain employers require drivers to possess the T license only for certain positions. Some drivers choose to get it to boost their chances in the field, and to demonstrate that they are able to operate a more complex vehicle.
Hazardous Materials
You will need a Class C commercial license to operate any vehicle that can transport 16 passengers or more including the driver. HazMat vehicles are included in this category too. In addition to passenger vans as well as small HAZMAT vehicles, this category includes vehicles that are used for general freight transportation and trucks with rated tanks. The holder of a class C CDL must have a tank endorsement, and could be required to pass the hazard material knowledge test.
Hazardous materials refer to any explosive, chemical gas, or other substance classified as hazardous in 49 CFR Part 172. It is defined as any substance that poses a significant threat of death, serious injury, severe property damage or significant endangerment of the safety, health or welfare of individuals or the environment and is transported using a vehicle other than an airplane, rail vehicle or vessel. A person who is a transporter of a hazardous substance in commerce is any agency, department or instrumentality of the United States, a State, a political subdivision of a State or an Indian tribe that transports hazardous substances.
The DOT has set specific rules that apply to the transportation of hazardous materials. These rules contain the requirements for shipping labels, papers placards, labels, and other topics. Any driver who does not follow these rules can be held accountable for a DOT violation, which could result in fines and penalties.
